How do you describe your own art practice?
I understand what I do as a work of discovery, rather than creation. I work with ideas, ideas common to a contemporary moment, to a context or experience. In my practice I consider the physical relationship of the spectator with the work, of the work with the space itself and the path it forms, to be inseparable. I am interested in generating a context, a total experience that leads – through other rhythms and attitudes – to a different way of occupying space; where the audience reach a point of tension that leads them to think about the reason for that state, what makes them uncomfortable, alert. I try to direct it, for example, through the disposition of objects, images, smells, vapors, sounds, liquids… in such a way that it forces them to somehow perform the space (generating sculptures with tactile or sensual appeal that attract towards a close experimentation, planes that interrupt the vision of the space, etc.)
When it comes to the formal resolution of the pieces (whether they are objects, installations, interventions, performance, video, etc), I usually use materials that involve strong associations with the body. At the same time, I try to generate an open, concise and forceful image; not to impose precise meanings, but to propose elements that generate a group of signs that move us towards other signs, and these towards others, and so on. An image that is rich in layers and different and possible meanings.
Which question or theme is central in your work?
Something that is central to my work is how technology and economics condition our physical and body perception. I investigate the possibilities of abstract representation that expand the idea of the body, understanding it as a place of storage, transmission and exchange of information from a post-humanist and occultist perspective. Through this I make an approximation to the structures of power and the mechanisms of control over the body designed by biocapitalism, leading to submission of will or the collapse of the individual as an autonomous entity. Although that’s not the main issue, as there are many questions of an existential nature such as pleasure, instability, dissatisfaction, uncertainty or desire that cohabit in all my projects.
What was your first experience with art?
I don’t know what was the first, but I always remember ‘En las entrañas del árbol” by Andy Goldsworthy at MNCARS (Madrid) as the first artistic project that I experienced consciously. In some reasons, it was tellingly for me. It was during a family visit to this city in 2007.
What is your greatest source of inspiration?
It is not so much an inspiration, but reading, thinking, writing, keeping my consciousness connected, being aware while I am walking or in any situation or doing anything in my day to day. In this way, unexpected derivations and combinations appear. Sometimes I don’t know what I’m looking for and I encounter in a fortuitous way with elements that are the beginning of something. In another moments I draw the ideas I have and look for the elements that could be part of the project. Usually in the use of the elements, the traces of my daily reality persevere –linked to the culture of the body through water sports and different healing therapies practiced by myself and/or my close circles– from which I gather forms, dynamics, smells, etc.
Consequently, I generate work with cross-references, which in most cases are the result of seeing the familiar with a new vision.
What do you need in order to create your work?
My body. Critical sense. Asking myself “why” all the time. Spending time cultivating ideas and digesting them.
Mi cuerpo. Sentido crítico. Preguntarme “por qué” todo el tiempo. Pasar tiempo cultivando ideas y digiriéndolas.
What work or artist has most recently surprised you?
I find the online presentation ‘Underground Flower reads: O Fluxo’s Flatland Reader’ interesting. It was presented earlier this month. @greedy_rigor, from Underground Flower w/ O Fluxo organize it in what appear to be a bazaar during this quarantine.
