How do you describe your own art practice?
I sculpt as a painter, I would say. I studied painting, but very soon I felt more interested in the material than in the image. I started to use other materials than just paint and gradually my work became 3d.
I built constructions out of all kind of materials. I start with a plan but in the process many things can happen so I never know what the out come will be.
What was your first experience with art?
The first work I remember is ‘De val der opstandige engelen’ by Pieter Bruegel de Oude. It was during a obligatory visit with my parents to the Museum van Schone Kunsten in Antwerp. I found those visits very boring at the age of five. The only fun part of those trips for me was the lunch at McDonalds. But that day this painting made a deep impression on me.
What is your greatest source of inspiration?
I collect a lot of stuff. All kind of materials which I find, buy or cross my path in some way can be a source of inspiration.
What do you need in order to create your work?
I need to create time and space for working. By that I mean that I have to find some kind of inner rest, the feeling that I don’t have to be at another place doing something else.
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I’m working on different works at the same time. They are all connected. One is made out of the left overs or negative space of the other.
What work or artist has most recently surprised you?
I was quite impressed by Michael Beutlers show in Hamburger Bahnhof.
