How do you describe your own art practice?
My practice consists in thinking through materials.
What was your first experience with art?
I’m not sure but I’ve been fascinated with oddly shaped things and visibly transitional places since a child. Growing up in an old minors town I liked spending my time in areas of abandoned iron mines; an inspiring place where natural resources used to be extracted and nature slowly took over again.
What is your greatest source of inspiration?
Inspiration is not a fixed thing, it moves and comes unexpected, sometimes triggered through boredom, or in a moment when material encounters lift me out of the everyday routine, like when a chewing gum get’s stuck to my shoe. Often though I find inspiration comes in the making itself.
What do you need in order to create your work?
A room for myself, time, a cup of tea, a state of self-unawareness.
What are you working on at the moment?
The last months I’ve worked on an installation for the show ‘Therefore.’ including Amir Chasson and Daniel Hundsdörfer, at Exgirlfriend gallery in Berlin, a site-specific piece for ‘New Relics’, a sculpture exhibition at Thames-Side Studios Gallery and a solo exhibition at Klemm’s showroom, Berlin.
What work or artist has most recently surprised you?
It’s been an interesting process working with Amir and Daniel on the show in Berlin and they have both surprised me in their different approaches to the idea of sculpture.
I’ve also enjoyed seeing Jay Gard’s latest exhibition at Sexauer Gallery in Berlin and I’m very fond of Asako Shiroki’s delicate wood installations.
