How do you describe your own art practice?
My last two projects were each triggered by a sentence heard in a specific context. “Je suis heureuse de vieillir” (“I am happy about getting old” ) for Elite Controllers and “No nos aprenden a morir” (“They don’t teach you how to die”) for Celebration. Such strong words tend to stick with me and are enough to get me started on a project.
What was your first experience with art?
It was with a book by L.F. Céline, “Journey to the end of the night”, a late encounter of sorts, which punched me in the face and sealed my love of words and of the representation each word can provoke, in every sense of the word.
What is your greatest source of inspiration?
Philosophy, as odd as it may sound. Thought permeates the image statement. Philosophy is a questioning process and so is photography.
What do you need in order to create your work?
Freedom, time and… a camera!
What are you working on at the moment?
I am finalising the sequel to “Celebration”.
Life and death interplay endlessly, they depend on one another. In this project I attempted to treat the subject of memory loss, not as an end in itself but as a profound change in relating to self and to others.
What work or artist has most recently surprised you?
The Clément Cogitore exhibition at Le Bal in Paris. A superb project that leaves you satisfied at first, then questioning later, infusing your mind with wavering thoughts.
