How do you describe your own art practice?
I would describe my practice as street photography via which I document objects and stories. Photography functions as a means of orientation in my ongoing exploration of social reality. I make, amongst other, printed matter, performances and installations.
What was your first experience with art?
That would probably be doing embroidery with my mother. We used to embroider the drawings that I would draw on pillowcases. And there are also the ballet classes that I did as a kid until my late teens.
What is your greatest source of inspiration?
Society at large.
What do you need in order to create your work?
I need a city to walk around in.
What are you working on at the moment?
Currently I’m working on a carpet on a kilim loom. I’m actually completing a carpet that a lady from my weaving class had started but unfortunately couldn’t finish due to health issues. In the carpet I’m trying to combine yarn together with material I’ve picked up on the street.
I’m also writing a text together with writer and curator Vincent van Velsen for my upcoming solo show, Care Taking, at Galerie van Gelder in Amsterdam in January 2017.
What work or artist has most recently surprised you?
I was impressed by Isa Genzken’s retrospective Mach Dich hübsch! at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam almost a year ago now. I’ve always loved her work so it was wonderful to see so much of it, such diverse work from different decades.
My own practice is quite multidisciplinary so it was reassuring to see in Isa’s show that with time a multiform body of work has sense.
