How do you describe your own art practice?
My art practice consists of photography, video, CGI and sculpture. In my recent works, I focus on the subjects of image culture, utilisation forms of daily life objects in different circumstances like war and resistance and immigration. I am trying to create visuals by forging the borders of photography and video beyond their form.
What was your first experience with art?
I was born in Istanbul and as you may know it is like an open-air museum. I don’t remember exactly when it was but with my elementary school we have visited the Archaeology Museum in Istanbul. As a boy, it was great an experience to see all the sculptures, paintings and ancient art forms.
What is your greatest source of inspiration?
Reading and seeing.
What do you need in order to create your work?
Absolutely, time. I need to spend time with the subject to digest it properly. I believe that time makes them strong. I am not in rush!
What are you working on at the moment?
I am researching how the usage forms of daily life objects transform in different incidents. For instance, I am investigating, what is the difference between the curtain in our room and a curtain that stretched out on the streets of Aleppo to protect the civilians?
What work or artist has most recently surprised you?
Tino Sehgal’s one-year performance series at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam during 2015. It was great to watch all the series. I was following all the performances each month.
