Volume can mean many things. It can be one part of a bigger series, as in books or records for example. Most commonly we connect it to sound, that is: how much space shall the sound take in the room? Because volume deals with the space that something takes, physically, acoustically and also symbolically.
In collaboration with Berlin based curator Nico Anklam, Five Volumes wants to underscore and expand Kuimet’s long relationship with the moving image and discourses around architectural modernisms found in and around Pärnu KEK Construction Company’s Housing unit “Kuldne Kodu” (Golden Home).
As a spatial experience, Five Volumes not only reflects about transformations of the photographic and cinematographic image. But Kuimet’s camera eye also gently pierces into architectural formations of modernism reflected through the context of Narva, a city in industrial decay between Estonia and Russia.
Where is the now? When is the here? Five Volumes is also about utopian promises and its various aesthetic manifestation as artistic material that we hear rushing through the endless time loops of Kuimet’s film and slide projectors. And in the end the show might be about the actual volume that these stories ask for in our containers of history.
Paul Kuimet (b. 1984) is an artist based in Tallinn, Estonia. His work has recently been exhibited and screened at Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt; European Central Bank, Frankfurt; KUMU Art Muse- um, Tallinn; WNTRP, Berlin; BOZAR Center for Fine Arts, Brussels and The Baltic Pavilion at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2016. In 2018 he participated in residency programmes at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels and will participate the Inter- national Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York City.
